The Law
Fire safety law is derived from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Commonly known as the Fire Safety Order, it places certain obligations on the responsible person to ensure that people are safe to use or be in their premises.
A responsible person is someone who;
is an employer;
a landlord;
has some form of control over a premises, or;
other affiliation to the premises
To comply with the Order, the responsible person has to;-
Carry out a risk assessment of the premises;
Identify any significant findings of a risk assessment;
In certain instances, record the significant findings;
Provide and maintain such fire precautions as are necessary to safeguard employees and visitors to the premises;
Provide appropriate training of employees in prevention, evacuation and emergency procedures;
Provide information on hazards and risks that may be present within a workplace;
Provide and maintain a management system that ensures the fore-going requirements are met and satisfactorily monitored and reviewed.
